Except that humans have been reading for thousands of years, and the concept of dyslexia only goes back to the 1880s. I read that book too, for a dyslexia course I took. I don't think her argument is all that convincing.

That would be convenient, since her side (the IDA, formerly the Orton Society) manufactured the "reading wars" in the first place, to sell their wares. I think what would be somewhat funny is if all the ed reformers were to pivot back to balanced literacy, so they can market a whole new batch of curriculums, retraining, and whatnot. They could get their lobbyists to sell it to the politicians, and then they could force it on us, like they did last time.

I do think it's funny that in that paper she's like "Oh, no, the NAEP is the lowest it's been in thirty years!" And then other people have pointed out that students who were 4th graders in 1992 have grown to be part of the most educated generation, like, ever.
